Kerala Backwaters – Enjoy the Hidden Gem of Kerala With Family

There’s a reason why Kerala is called ‘God’s Own Country’. The state boasts magnificent scenery and varied topography that’s enough to keep you enthralled. But it goes a step further and regales you with amazing experiences to enjoy, too. These include a date with wildlife, making a splash at beaches, and immersing yourself in the tranquility of the Kerala backwaters. With so many wonderful things on offer, it’s no wonder that the state makes for an ideal destination for family vacations.

Kerala Backwaters

Here are some fun places to visit in Kerala if you would like a holiday in its pristine backwaters.

Alleppey

Fondly known as the ‘Venice of the East’, this is one of the best tourist places in Kerala where you can enjoy the backwaters. Its network of inland canals, beaches, and lagoons make this a picturesque spot. Here, you can embark on a backwater cruise, see how locals make coir products, and witness traditional village life. One of the best times to visit Alleppey is during the Aranmula Snake Boat Race, which is something that will surely excite your children!

Kollam

Experience the Kerala backwaters like never before at Kollam, one of the oldest ports on the Malabar Coast. The exquisite Lake Ashtamudi forms about 30% of this town, which is famous for its cashews. Here, you can hop onto a houseboat for the longest ride compared to all the backwater regions (for eight hours!) and enjoy the views of lilies and birds.

Kumarakom

Situated by Lake Vembanad, Kumarakom is one of the most scenic backwater destinations, with verdant paddy fields, beds of white lilies, and mangrove forests coexisting in abundance. Make sure to take a country boat ride across its canals and also visit the bird sanctuary, which will delight your kids. It’s also one of the best destinations in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatments.

Kuttanad

This is the lowest spot in India and is located below mean sea level. It’s called the ‘Rice Bowl of India’ owing to the many paddy fields situated here. You can spend time with kids spotting the various bird species, as well as gorge on the luscious bananas, yams, and cassavas that grow here.

Kasaragod

This is one of the lesser-known Kerala backwater spots. Far from the hullabaloo of crowds, it’s the perfect place to witness authentic village life. You can also take the kids to the themed Oyster opera village, and the various forts and historical structures that surround it.

We have visited Kerala during monsoon, contrary to popular belief; the verdant vegetation encompasses the surrounding as far as eyes can see. It’s the gateway to tranquil ambience. It’s great to travel here monsoon as you can escape crowds. The accommodation and conveyance allowance falls steeply, yes we could book and cars at much cheaper rate. We stayed in 5 different hotels in the entire trip, first day at Ernakulam, second day at Munnar, third day at Alleppey, next in Kanyakumari.
